Congratulations! The contracts have been exchanged, and the settlement date is locked in. This is a huge milestone, and it's time to start preparing for your move with confidence. This extensive checklist will help you manage the entire process, ensuring every detail is covered so you can focus on the excitement of your next chapter.
6 to 4 Weeks Before the Move
This is the time to start the big, overarching tasks and get organised.
Legal & Financial
- Book an Insurance Consultation: Contact your insurer to cancel your home insurance on the settlement date and arrange for home and contents insurance at your new home if you are moving to another property.
- Finalise Mortgage: If you are paying off a mortgage, contact your bank to arrange for the final repayment to be made on the day of settlement.
Booking & Services
- Book Removalists: Get final quotes from removalists and book your preferred company immediately to secure your date.
- Book Professional Cleaning: If you plan to hire professional cleaners for the final clean, book them now for the day after the move.
- Book a Handyman: If there are any minor repairs or touch-ups required as per the contract, book a handyman for the week of the move.

3 to 2 Weeks Before the Move
Now is the time to start packing in earnest and handle essential service transfers.
Packing Strategy
- Get Packing Supplies: Buy or find boxes, tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, and markers.
- Start Packing: Begin packing non-essential items you won't need until after the move, such as books, out-of-season clothing, and items from the garage or shed.
- Create an "Essentials Box": Prepare a dedicated box with everything you'll need for your first 24-48 hours. Include toilet paper, toiletries, medication, a change of clothes, phone chargers, snacks, and a small toolbox.
- Set aside Valuables: Pack all important documents and valuables (e.g., jewellery, personal laptops, heirlooms) into a separate, clearly labelled box that you will transport yourself.
Utilities & Services
- Arrange Disconnections: Contact all your utility providers (electricity, gas, water) to arrange for disconnection at your old home on the day of settlement.
- Arrange Reconnections: Arrange for the utilities to be connected at your new home (if applicable).
- Finalise Mail Redirection: Set up mail redirection with Australia Post.
The Final Week
This is the home stretch. Focus on the final details and last-minute packing.
Final Preparations
- Finish Packing: Complete all packing, leaving only the essentials for the final few days.
- Label Boxes: Ensure every box is clearly labelled with its contents and the room it belongs to.
- Arrange for Pets & Kids: Finalise arrangements for pets and children on moving day.
- Finalise Cleaning: Complete any final cleaning tasks you plan to do yourself, such as wiping down walls or cleaning the oven.
- Empty the Fridge: Begin using up all perishable food items.
- Appliances: Unplug, clean, and dry your fridge and freezer a day or two before the move.
Moving Day
The day is here. Take a deep breath and stay calm.
- Be Ready: Wake up early and be prepared for the removalists to arrive.
- Final Meters: Take a final reading of your electricity, gas, and water meters and take a photograph for your records.
- Final Walkthrough: Once the removalists have left, do one final walkthrough of every room, cupboard, and drawer to ensure nothing is left behind.
- Hand Over the Keys: Your All in Property agent will coordinate with your conveyancer and the buyer's agent for the official handover of the keys.
- Celebrate! Order some takeaway and toast to your new home.
